In one line

Section Command: Helmand Ops is a real-time tactics game about the British Army in Helmand, played from above, a section at a time.

Short description

Section Command: Helmand Ops is a real-time tactics game about the British Army in Afghanistan. You command a rifle company's sections, teams and attachments directly, the way a platoon commander would: suppress, flank and clear compounds, call in the guns and the Chinook, and win the valley's people round without losing your men. A free playtest, one mission, plays in the browser now while the full campaigns are built; the full game is coming to Steam.

The longer version

A Chinook puts your company down on a field outside Zarghun Kalay at first light. The hill above the village is where the patrol base goes. The Taliban hold every compound between you and it, and the families who lived in them are waiting to see who wins.

Your sections fight the way they were trained: one group puts rounds down while the other bounds, the gun goes to the flank, smoke, then the assault. Compounds are cleared room by room. The wounded go down, not out: buddy aid, the team medic, and the MERT in the back of a Chinook if you can hold the landing zone. The Fire Support Team brings the guns, mortars, attack helicopters and fast air, but only onto a target somebody can see.

Around the fighting is a valley full of people, with a pattern of life: men in the fields, children running up to the patrol, a farmer on his motorbike to the bazaar. The rules of engagement are the ones the soldiers had: no positive identification, no shooting. Every civilian who gets hurt costs you the village's trust, and its help.

Features

  • Command a British rifle company's sections, fire teams and attachments in real time, from above.
  • Fire and movement, cover, and compound clearances as the British Army trained them.
  • The casualty chain: buddy aid, the team medic, the MERT by Chinook.
  • Fire support on the radio, onto targets someone can see. Every round is yours to answer for.
  • A valley with a pattern of life, the rules of engagement as they were, IEDs in the tracks, and shuras with the elders.
  • No two missions play out the same: the enemy forces are randomised, there's more than one way to complete each one, and how you go about it is up to you.
  • Patrol bases built with sangars, HESCO and towers, held by your own platoons, and handed to the Afghan Army.
  • A free playtest now: the five training areas and one mission, Zarghun (three days), the ground where the systems are being tuned with players' feedback. The full game is planned as campaigns built around a fourteen-day tour.
  • Played from above in 2D, with the soldiers, vehicles and people built as 3D models and drawn from overhead, all in the same light.

History

Section Command began in October 2026, built on the engine of Charlie Foxtrot Company, the studio's free browser squad game. Charlie Foxtrot is loud and daft on purpose; Section Command is the opposite, as close to the real thing as one developer can get it. Its free demo went up on this site on 18 October 2026; since 19 October it has been presented as what it is, a playtest: Zarghun, the only mission for now, where the systems are tuned with players' feedback while the full campaigns are built. On 19 October it was named Section Command: Helmand Ops, the 2D game being finished for Steam. The devlog follows it as it goes.

Videos and streaming

You may stream Section Command: Helmand Ops and monetise your videos, on any platform. No need to ask. A link to tacticalchicken.games/section-command in the description helps a small game a lot, and I'd love to see what you make of it.
